The adventures of getting a urine sample

Mikayla has never liked to have her diaper changed, but the past several days she has started screaming and crying when we use a wipe on her. Also, a couple of days ago she said something about her pee-pee hurting. I got her in to see a nurse practitioner yesterday morning. She wasn't a whole lot of help. Mikayla isn't potty trained so getting her to pee in a cup was out of the question. What she should have done was cath her. But I don't think she wanted to bother, so she stuck a plastic bag to Mikayla's crotch and then put Mikayla's pants back on her. She sent me home with a cup to pour the pee into. But not only did Mikayla walk bow legged half the day - she refused to go pee. After lunch, Mikayla took a 3 hour nap. She woke up dry. Now keep in mind that Mikayla slept the night before without peeing, and all day so far without going pee. But even if she did pee in that bag, it probably would have spilled out while she was laying down. The bag might have worked ok on a boy, but girls are shaped differently. So anyway, she woke up from her nap and the bag started coming off so I took it the rest of the way off. I went and got her potty chair (that she never uses), put it in front of the tv, put the cup in the bowl of the chair, and sat Mikayla on it. She sat there for a very long time watching cartoons - but no pee. Finally, after getting so uncomfortable, she got up and begged me to put her diaper on. I did, and she instantly peed in it. I called the nurse practitioner and told her that Mikayla refused to pee in anything but her diaper, and she made an appt for Mikayla to see her regular doctor this morning.

So, we see her regular doc this morning and she of course wants to do the cath. I knew Mikayla would hate it, but I knew it would be for the best. It took me, and 2 nurses to hold her down, and a 3rd nurse to do the cath. Mikayla was screaming and crying so loud, you would have thought we were trying to murder her. Even the old lady in the next room started bawling, she felt so bad for Mikayla. Anyway, the nurse didn't do the cath right or something. She got a tiny amount, and the rest of the urine went all over the bed and soaked Mikayla's shirt. The amount she did get was enough to do a dip test but not enough to do the culture. The dip test turned out fine. But the doc wanted a culture done on it. So she sent me home with yet another cup. I had Mikayla stand with her legs apart while I held the cup under her. I let her lean on me and we did this in the front room so she could watch Ni Hao Kilan. I must have stayed in the same akward position for 20 minutes straight. Then I felt like my arm was gonna fall off. So I put the cup in her potty chair again and had her sit on it. And I got desperate. Not only did I threaten her with taking her back to the doctor to have another cath done again, I did all sorts of bribing and begging. Telling her that I would take her to Walmart so she could by a toy kitty cat seemed to excite her. But she still sat a long time without doing anything. Finally she couldn't hold it any longer and when she asked for her diaper on, I refused. She FINALLY sat on her potty and went. She was so proud of herself! Only a third of her pee went into the cup (I guess I didn't have it positioned right), but when I took it the the doctors office, the nurse thought it would be enough. Hopefully we will hear the results tomorrow. And luckily, she found a stuffed cat for $5.
